Five mass produced cars that the world forgot to save

Despite tens of thousands of some very individual Classic Cars being produced, only a very few remain in existence. Here are five such models. Whilst this article from the Exchange and Mart is somewhat doubtful with regard to accuracy of numbers, it does bring to our attention some cars that have been overlooked.

For example, the Mazda RX 2 Capella was imported into Australia by the manufacturer in reasonable numbers, and has now become a cult car. The car was light and very quick for it's day, with V8 eating performance. The car came standard with a 12A rotary engine with twin distributors, an engine that was later enhanced to become the 13B for use in RX7's. This engine was often transplanted into RX2's, as it was a very simple conversion that offered an immediate power increase. Torque however, was not a real feature of rotaries. We bought several of these cars for Rallying, as it was easier to buy another complete running car for AU$500 then to repair the one that we had just written off. A nice genuine original rotary powered RX2 is currently selling for AU$20-30,000.

The Toyota Supra was imported into Australia in significant numbers as a "Grey Import", by many, many Japanese Car Importers including us. They are a great car with an awesome shape, and they did originally come complete with a pretty serious rear wing, which some have chosen to remove. That said, with the big straight six engine, they had plenty of torque and looked great, and so would have to be a future Classic Car. They are still around in reasonable numbers in Australia, and can still be puchased for AU$5,000. We will be acquiring as many as we can fit into our factory.

The VW Scirocco was a little bit special across Europe, although did succomb to rust quite early in their life. That said, the Scirocco Storm was the one to get, with full leather trim, the Golf Gti engine, as well as improved gear and final drive ratiios. Most had sunroof's, and handled very well for their time. They were basically a re-bodied Golf, and were arguably prettier. Definitely worth stockpiling.
